To deal with the key obstacles in hybridization , castration difficulties and embryo abortion, Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.)was mainly studied on cytological, physiological and biochemical mechanism of male sterility and embryo abortion on the bases of identifying natural fertility of many cultivars pollen and embryo, including Chinese jujuba cv Dongzao and Linyilizao. In addition, plantlets were regenerated from embryo of Chinese jujuba cv "male sterility No 1 (MSN1)" , which belonged to low embryo fertility cultivars. The results are as follows:1The correlation between viable pollen rate from I2-IK and TTC staining and pollen germination rate were significantly positive. So the fast identification of pollen fertility could be achieved by pollen I2-IK staining to evaluate a large amount of cultivars and the results could be further identified by pollen culture.2Pollen fertility of different cultivars identified by I2-IK staining displayed significant difference and approximate normal distribution with excursion for low value.Chinese jujube cultivars with significantly different pollen fertility obtained by I2-IK staining could be divided into 5 groups, including high fertility ( viable pollen rate>54 % ) ,middle fertility ( 43% < viable pollen rate < 54% ) fertility ( 28% < viable pollen rate < 43%) ,middle sterility ( 17%
