China is the second largest corn producer in the world, and maintain 24 million hectares corn planted field per year, Transgenic corn have been extensively developed which are in the pipeline readily for commercial application in china.Based on the priority of environmental and food safety assessment of gene-tically modified (GM) crops in our country and the relevant national projects that we have undertaken, the following three important issues are studied in this thesis that include:1. Transgene flow to hybrid cornTransgenic Corn is one of major GM crops in the world and the dispersal of transgenic Corn pollen is considered as a major issue in the risk assessment of transgenic corn. The objective of this study was to determine the gene flow of transgenic corn under ecologic environment condition in China. A transgenic corn variety GA21 carrying the EPEPS gene was planted in the 5 x 5 m2 plot, while Luyu No.10, a non-transgenic corn variety was grown surrounding them. From non-transgenic corn plants with various distance from the transgenic corn plot, seeds were collected and then screened for the EPEPS gene using herbicide spray and PCR assay. Highest flow frequency(45.10%) of the transgene was observed at 0 to 5 m distance from transgenic plot and the frequency decreased with increase of the distance. The transgene even could be detected from seeds of non-transgenic plants that were up to 150 m far away from the transgenic plants.According to these results,it can be concluded that for a small-scale field test, the possibility of escapes of engineered gene to wild relatives was also discussed. we also figured out that a 200 m distance for separation is nessary for preventing gene flow from transgenic corn to non-transgenic corn.2. Impact on BiodiversityThe potential impact on biodiversity is important for determining environmental safety, Transgenic corn (MON810) can resistant to target pest species remarkably (90% efficiency), but has no remarkable influence on their natural enemy or.non-target pest species. There are totally 44 species of insects and spiders in the fields planted with transgenic corn the same as there are it is in the field planted with non-trangenic corn.3. Survival competitive abilityApplying transgenic herb-tolerance crops can make enormous economic and social benefit, but also has potential risk, one of its risks is to become super weed. As a result of there are no weed can hybrid with corn or wild corn species in china, the only risk is the transgenic corn it...
