China is a big agricultural country with big population, less arable land. Currently, the population is still increasing, however the plant area is reducing and the agricultural entironment is worsening. So there is a difficult problem to resolve urgently, namely, how to gain high yield in foodstuff to meet people's increasing demand and how to carry out sustainable agriculture in limited plant area. Using intercropping or relay-intercropping system to make full use of land is the best way to resolve the problem. Maize intercropped peanut is a kind of intercropping system of legumina and non-legumina that has the excellence of high yield, high benefit and symbiotic nitrogen fixation. So it is important in theory and in practice to resolve the difficult problem by researching the characters of maize intercropped peanut to enhance the potential of food production and N fixation. From 2004 to 2005, at the research base of Shandong agricultural university, the experiments were conducted to investigate: the yield, benefit, N uptake and utilization, P uptake and utilization, photosynthesis and N metabolism, the balance of N in soil, the balance of P in soil, the contribution ratio of N uptake and utilization to intercropping advantage and the contribution ratio of P uptake and utilization to intercropping advantage, the interspecific interaction of underground between maize and peanut in the intercropping system by root separation in pool culture, effects of intercropping on N fixation of peanut and N transfer from peanut to maize in the maize‖peanut intercropping by 15N-labeling technique in pool culture. The main results were as follows:1. Intercropping advantages of Maize‖peanut intercropping was outstanding, LER and IER were enhanced by 14%-18%.1.1 The yield and benefit of maize‖peanut intercropping...
