The new variety comparison trial, regional test and seed production of Agropyronmongolicum Keng cv. Mengnong No. 1 were carried out in Hohhot, Xisu Banner,Zhengian Banner, Inner Mongolian, since 2001. The results showed that:(1)The plant of new variety is tall and the tillering ability is strong. The plant heightreached to 106cm at florescence stage and was taller by 19cm than A. mongolicum Kengcv. Neimeng, the variation scope was reduced from 56cm tol9cm; the tiller number perplant reached to 146.6 in the second year, increased by 18.2; Moreover, leaf number,length and width, ear length, florets number per spike and florets number per spikelet ofthe new variety were obviously increased compared to original population; at the sametime, the number of reproductive tillers was also obviously increased, the earing rate wasenhanced by 10.6%compared to the original population. Moreover, the plant color wasdark green with uniform.(2) After the selective breeding, the performance of new variety was improved,average hay yield was 5797.9kg/hm~2, increased by 28.8%; average seed yield was444.2kg/hm~2, increased by 38.5%.(3) The drought resistance of Nordan wheatgrass at trefoil stage was the strongest,Mengnong wheatgrass the next, A. mongolicum Keng cv. Neimeng and Agropyronmongolicum Keng cv. Mengnong No. 1 were weaker, and there were no significantdifferences in seedling drought resistance between them.(4) Since the leaf number was increased, the grass quality of the new variety wasimproved. In heading stage, the crude protein content was 15.89%, higher than that oforiginal population. Moreover, the optimal time for forage utilization was the middleheading stage.(5) The seed production of new variety should be in the place where the annualprecipitation≧300ram, frost-free period≧120d, the annual accumulative temperature≧10℃is more than 1800℃, the sunlight is sufficient, the wind is mild. Hohhot andZhenglan Banner of Inner Mongolian are suitable place for the seed production. InZhenglan Banner, the reproductive tillers of the new variety reached to 172/m, the floretnumber reached to 168/ear, seed number up to 69/ear, the thousand seeds weight reachedto 2.16g, the potential seed yield was 1560.4kg/hm~2, the performance seed yield up to733.8kg/hm~2. (6) The proper sowing time in Zhenglan Banner of Inner Mongolian is early springor late autumn which is advantageous in seedling, earing differentiation and seed setting,normal seed yield can be obtained in seeding year.(7) The optimal row spacing was 38cm, the seed manure rate was 6g/m(157.Skg/hm~2) and seeding rate was 0.5~2.0g/m(13.3~52.6kg/hm~2) for seed productionin Zhenglan Banner.(8) The seed yield in the 4th year was decreased, was 35.9%of the yield in the firstyear. However, if the multi-elements compound fertilizer was applied at rate of150kg/hm~2 after harvesting, the performance seed yield may reached to 1165.4kg/hm~2which was 5.2 times of that not applying fertilizer.
