Part â… : Relationship between the heparanase and the invasion and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma[Objective] To achieve the insights into the relationship between heparanase(HPA) and the invasion and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).[Methods! Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to measure the expression of HPA mRNA in 33 primary tumor tissues of HCC and 9 normal liver tissues, and statistics were made to analyze the association between the HPA mRNA and the invasive and metastatic indexes of HCC.[Results] The expression of HPA gene was positive in 16 primary tumor tissues of HCC, and the positive rate was significantly higher than those in surrounding liver parenchyma and normal liver tissues (/KO. 01). HPA expression was independent of the size of tumor, envelope formation, AFP level , HBsAg state and cirrhosis of liver (.P>Q. 05) . The positive rate for HPA gene in high or low-tendency to metastatic recurrence group was 71.4% (10/14) and 31. 6% (6/19), respectively (KO. 05), in patients with or without metastatic recurrence during postoperative follow up was 78.6% (11/14) and 21.4% ( 3/14 ) , respectively (KO. 01). In addition to, the poorlydifferentiated or TNM stage ffl-IV tumors had a higher positive rate of HPA gene than the well-mediate differentiated or TNM stage I -II tumors (KQ. 05).[Conclusions] HPA might play an important role in the invasion and metastasis of HCC. HPA mRNA may be one of the reliable markers for the metastatic activity gained by the liver tumor cells and could be used clinically in predicting metastatic recurrence of HCC.
