In order to search for the active compounds from marine natural products. methunol extracts of thirty-nine species collected from the coasts of Shandong belonging to the classes Phaeophyceae,Rhodophyceae and Chlorophyceae were assayed for the activities of anti-inflammation,antitumor and antibacterial basing on cell based assay and enzyme based assay.On the molecular level. HUMAN l.l-UKOCYTK HI.ASTASH ( HI. I- ,FC3.4.2 1 .37 ) was selected as the special target to test for the anti-inflammatory activity in vitro. And thus the systematic lll.li screening model was established. With HLE model,the algal extracts were tested. Of these,nineteen were active and others not. Among the active,five species of red algae. Symphyocladia Latinscula ,Plocamium telfairiae Gracilaria verrucosa ,Chondria lenuiasima and Chondria crassicaulis. had strong effects against HLR. especially the two extracts of Chondria tenuissima and Chondria crassicaulis (93.3%. 95.7% inhibition at 25u.g ml). These suggest that some species of red algae possibl) obtain anti-inflammatory substances. Among the active brown algae,only two. I.L'athi'sia muni and Chorda Hum. exhibited strong effects. Furthermore. The strongest activity was observed by the ( 'liorda filiim extracts that exhibited 98.9% inhibition at 25(.ig ml. These show that Chorda filum may have some compounds with remarkable inhibitory effect against III. P.. Differently,green algae have no activity in the experiment.On the cellular level,the antibacterial and anticancer activities of the algalextracts were assayed. To the antibacterial activity,the MIC of all extracts were over 20ug ml. To the anticancer activity ,the extracts of (ii'liilittm umciH.'iii Scylosiphon lomentarhts and I.eathesia mm a show more than 80% inhibition against both cancer cells,esp the extracts of Cerumium kondoi and ('honla filum with 90% inhibition higher.In addition,the inhibitory effect of two species of algae (Desmarestia viridls and Grucilaria lemaneiformis) collected in different seasons was observed individually. The results showed that there were differences between the inhibitory activity,which indicate that anti-inflammatory activity of algal extracts could vary with seasons (P<0.05).While analyzing chemically active ingredients from Chorda filum and Grttciltirici vi'rruco.sa. algal sterol was isolated,which were used to verify the effecting rale ofHLF. Model further,and showed some certain inhibitory activity comparing with ursolic acid.
