Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) has accumulated abundant experience during the prevention and treatment of tumors. There is much originality on the application of prescription and treatment strategy of TCM, which is the foundation of integrating TCM and western medicine to prevent and cure tumors. Modem scientific technology including all the achievements on modem medicine should be utilized sufficiently and actively to improve the TCM therapeutic methods (such as toxicity reducing and effect enhancing, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, purgation and clearing away heat and detoxicating, depriving the evil wetness and eliminating sputum, like curing like, soothing liver and regulating Qi ), and to explore new approach in immunoloregulation, microcirculation, cytobiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetic engineering etc. Convinced data, which are provided through those above, will be used for discovering the origin of tumors as well as preventing and curing tumors and will be made use of clarifying the theory about controlling generation, progress, recurrence and metastasis of tumors. According to the TCM rule of like curing like, Arsenic Trioxide has been used to cure tumors by Chinese scientists first. Effects and mechanisms of Arsenic Trioxide against acute promyelocytic leukemia(APL) have been interpreted from the aspects of cytobiology and molecular biology. The agent of Arsenic Trioxide- arsenious acid parenteral solution, has been approved as a new drug of second kind and its application also has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration(FDA). Arsenic Trioxide has a possible effect on curing of Hepatocarcinoma in late phase and lymphoma. Therapeutics of Arsenic Trioxide also bring good prospect for the treatment of solid carcinoma and other kind of tumors indigestive system.The gastric cancer morbidity is the highest in all kinds of malignant tumors in China. About 160 thousand patients died of gastric cancer every year. Therefore, the study on gastric cancer has been considered as the key point in clinical and basic research work. Especially with the accomplishment of human genorrie project, gene therapy will become the most important method for tumor treatment in 21st century. Telomerase is a specialized ribonucleoprotein enzyme that compensates for the loss of telomeres, by synthesizing telomere repeat sequence using an RNA component as a template; Telomerase may play an important role in maintenance of telomere length and cell immortalization. Up to now, telomerase is a wide and specific tumor marker, and telomerase is closely associated with cellular senescence, immortality and carcinogenesis. Telomerase has become a new anticancer target because telomerase activity is not detectable in most somatic tissues, but high telomerase activity have been detected in over 85% of human cancer. Telomerase consists of several components, but the most important component responsible for the enzymatic activity of telomerase is human telomerase reverse transcriptase(hTERT). In the course of cell immortalization and tumor progression, the activation of telomerase activity needs the expression of hTERT. In recent reports, studies have found that the expression of hTERT is closely associated with telomerase activity. Therefore, tumor gene therapy by using hTERT as a target may be more effective and targeted. According to it, Firstly, we study the mechanism and effects of arsenic trioxide on telomerase activity of human gastric cancer cell line.
