The unlimited proliferation is one of the most fundamental biologic behavior of all tumors, Which is involved in abnormalities of multiple gene alterations and regulations. Recent advances indicate that activation of telomerase is the most important moleculor foundation of the uncontrolled tumor cell proliferation. Owing to telomerase expression in almost all cancers but not in almost all normal tissues, it should be possible to act as a specific tumor marker and an ideal cancer target.Although problem exist, antisense technique provides an impontant tool in probing functions of certain genes and a useful approach in cancer gene therapy. In the present study, we observed the expression of telomere and telomerase in gastric carcinoma by hybridization of nucleic acids directly in agarose gels and a telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP), and investigated the effect of human telomerase antisense RNA (hTR) on the malignant phenotype of gastric cancer cell SGC7901.
