Ishemic heart disease (IHD) is caused by coronal blood circulation changes and induces the imbalance of myocardial supply and demand. IHD includes myocardial ishemia which arises from functional and organic alteration of the coronal arteries, which in turn, comes about due to acute and chronic diminished blood supply. Its most common pathogenisis is the straightening and obstruction of the coronary arteries from atherosclerosis.Therefore, IHD is also called Atherosclerotic heart disease. Whether in developed countries or in developing countries, IHD is a deadly and deforming disease, so widely epidemic that it imperils the whole of humankind' s health. Of course, of which the life expectancy and quality of life suffers from it too. Even though the mortality rate in most countries went down over the past 30 years in all but eastern European countries, IHDremains the major cause of death for males over the age of 45. For females , it is the second leading cause of death next to cancer. In 2001, in America, there were 6. 4 million patients sick with angina. There were 1. 1 million people sick with recurrent or first-time acute coronary syndrome(ACS), including non-stable angina pectoris, acute infarction and sudden death. In our country, the mortality of cardio-vascular system diseases in urban areas has increased over America and Canada, having become a susceptible, country to cardio-vascular disease. It is obvious, at this time, that everyone here needs to be educated about the dangers of IHD and treated if suffering from it.To date, there are many treating methods that have been developed such as: medication therapy, interposition therapy, ultrasound therapy, thrombolytic therapy, cell therapy, gene therapy. Among the above, medication therapy is always important and irreplaceable.Tribulus terrestris is also called Bai Jili and Ci Jili. It refers to the dry, ripe fruit of the plant caltrop. Its main chemical ingredients are saponins, ketone, alkaloid. The gross saponins of Tribulus terrestris(GSTT) was one of the effective group ingredients which was exracted from the whole plant of caltrop. It is a mixture of over 10 kinds of saponins, mainly steroid saponins. It mainly includes furan-strol and spiral -strol. It is a powder and dissolvable in water. Domestic research materials showed that GSTT had: the effect of loweringblood pressure and stimulating anti-hypoxia, sheeting blood vessels,lowering cholesterol, inhibiting fat deposition on arteries, myocardium and liver. It also inhibited atherosclerotic occurrence and development, protecting the isolated heart from the ishemai/reperfusion (I/R) injury. It had positive effects on brain ishemia, lowered blood sugar, improved micro-circulation, showed anti-aging properties and imporved sex function. It was well studied abroad too. The materials showed that it was mainly about improving sexual function but no records about research on cardio-vascular system .Capsuled preparation of GSTT has been used for diseases of cardio-brain- vascular system in clinical treatment for a long time, and it was demonstrated that it is effective. But its complete molecular mechanism was unknown to date. These past few years, our research team did a lot a research studying the anti-ischemic effects of GSTT on the myocardium and brain. We finished the toxicology and pharmacology experiments concerning the preparation transfer from capsule to injection. It was proven that injected GSTT had anti-ishemic effects on the brain as well as anti-thrombotic effects. It was also proven that indexes of blood flow , lowering the blood platelets assembling rate.Now we are performing many experiments on the protective mechanism of anti-ishemia of heart and brain from different angles, such as, the whole animal( in vivo), isolated tissue,cellular level and subcellular level (in vitro).
