Objective: Hepatocyte growth factor is a potent mitogen and motogen for cells, it can promote tumour invasion and metastasis. In order to study the relation between HGF and hepatocellular carcinoma, the serum HGF level were detected in patients with HCC or cirrhosis of the liver before or after the operation.Method: To measure the plasma HGF concentrations in patients with HCC, cirrhosis, hepatitis and normal control group by enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay; the HGF level and liver function, AFP, platelet count, pathologic examination were analysed.Result: The serum HGF level was higher in HCC than that of other groups, it hard to detect in normal group. The serum HGF level in HCC, cirrhosis, hepatitis patients and control group were as follows:0.620±0.056ng/ml, 0.364 ± 0.031ng/ml, 0.379 ±0.033ng/ml, 0.211 ±0.028ng/ml.The difference between HCC and other groups was significant (P<0.01 = ;The HGF level in patients with HCC were of no obvious different between preoperative days and three days after operation, P>0.05;however, it had significant difference 7-10days later, P<0.01;It had close relation with tumour's volume, tumour microvessel density. Conclusion: The serum HGF is a useful tumour marker for patient with HCC.
