OBJECTIVES: To study the pathogenesis and malignancy process of meningiomas and analyze the predictive value of MRI information to the tumor's biological characteristics. METHODS: This study was trying to find out some bio-markers that correlated with the pathogenesis and malignancy progress of meningiomas by using cDNA microarrays and tissue microarrays combined with immunohistochemical techniques. Furthermore, the correlations between the bioliogical characteristics and MRI signal characters were analyzed. RESULTS: The gene express pattern and the tissue microarrays of meningiomas were established, through which this study have found out more than 100 genes and 5 antigens that perhaps related to the pathogenesis and manlignancy process of meningiomas. The signal characters in MRI were correlated with the biological characteristics of the tumors seen in operation. CONCLUSIONS: The cDNA microarray and tissue microarray combined with the immunohistochemical techniques were scientific methods in the investigations of meningiomas, which could detect certain tumor-markers in RNA and protein levels and help studies of the tumorgenesis and malignancy process of meningiomas. The information of MRI can provide us some valuable predictive factors to understand the biological characteristics of meningiomas.
