For a long time, it was known that the capability of self-reparation of central nervous system (CNS) was very limited. Neurons in CNS could not regenerate once damaged and would only be replaced by glial cells. So there have been few effective therapies for CNS disease in clinic. The patients with CNS disease always submit severe neurological disability that brings about heavy tension on their family and the society.Stem cells are unique primitive cell populations with the ability to undergo both self-renewal and differentiation. In recent years, research on stem cells had been made rapid progress and was thought being one of the most important medicine science advancement in 20th by science magazine. Stem cell science has been the most promising areas after human gene sequencing. Recent studies indicated that there were neural stem cells (NSC) in cerebral cortex, subependymal zone, hippocampus and striatum. They all had the capacity of renewing itself and giveing rise to specialized cell types. A series of research indicated that transplantation NSC into brain could raise synapse connection with host nerve fiber and significant ameliorated the neurological function. But the application of NSC has been limited for its resource and ethical problems. So it is essential to find an alternative source of stem cell for cell transplantation, which can differentiate neuron, astrocyte or oligodendrocyte and ameliorate neural damage. As a source of stem cell, human umbilical cord blood (hUCB) has no ethical problems and can be ease collected and banked with low immunogenicity. Ogawa firstly reported that there were primitive haemopoietic stem cells in hUCB and used them as a source of transplantable stem cells for the treatment of pediatric leukemia. Recent research indicated...
