This dissertation studied the chemical constituents of Kadsura coccinea and Juglans regia. The family Schisandraceae consists of the genus Schisandra and Kadsura, there are more than fifty species of these two genera in China and nineteen species are used as traditional and folk medicines. As a common ingredient in prescriptions and can also be used alone as a tonic and astringent, the dried fruit of S. chinensis is wildly used in traditional Chinese medicine, which was also listed in classical compendium of Material Medica as one of the 'superior medicines', and used in clinic for more than 2000 years in China. During the 1970s, honey pills of S. chinensis were used for the treatment of hepatitis with satisfactory results in lowering elevated SGPT levels. A considerable number of studies have been performed on plants of the family Schisandraceae. These investigations have yielded dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans, lanostane triterpenoid acids, and lactones with pharmacological properties, including antihepatitis, antihepatotoxic, antioxidant, antitumor, and anti-HIV activities.Kadsura coccinea is a climbing plant, widely distributed in the southern part of China. The dried roots and stems are used for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers in folk medicine. It is listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia under the name 'Radix Kadsura coccinea'. The main components of K. coccinea include dibenzocyclooctadienes and triterpenoids. Total 30 compounds isolated from K. coccinea from its 80% acetone extracts. All of them were elucidated by various spectra, including four new dibenzocyclooctadienes (1-4) named kadsuralignan A, B, E and H; one new 4-arylnaphthalene lignan named kadsuralignan C (7), one new spirodienone lignan named kadsuralignan D (12); one new sesquiterpene named kadsurene A (19); two new triterpenoids named kadsuralactone B (24) and kadsurene A (27); three new...
