Bladder cancer is on the top of genitourinary malignancies in Chinese males. Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is predominant. However, the etiology and pathogenesis are not clear. HPV-16/18 are confirmed one of the etiological factors of cervical carcinoma. Since there may be some similarities between the urinary system and cervix in embryogenesis and anatomy structure, scholars think that the infection of HPV-16/18 may be participated in the carcinogenesis of TCC of the urinary bladder. Our previous study detected HPV-16/18 E7 DNA in TCC spicemens, and we also detected HPV-18 DNA segment in PUMC-91 cell line of TCC. All these were prompted there may have some relationship between TCC and the infection of HPV-16/18.In the research of the cervical carcinoma, the infection of HPV-16/18 may lead to some morphlogical character, and they act on p53 and Rb genes through E6 and E7 oncogenes respectively in carcinogenesis of the cervical carcinoma. It is well accepted that HPV-16/18 may immortalize cells of different tissues in vitro. But the study of HPV-16/18 infection and TCC of urinary bladder was little. In order to further elucidate the relationship between the infection of HPV-16/18 and TCC of the urinary bladder, we continued to examine the HPV-16/18 DNA in TCC specimens and the correspondent morphorlogical characters, and...
