| Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is an infectious human disease that is distributed widely throughout the world. It is clinically characterized by high fever, various hemorrhagic manifestations and transcient renal dysfunction. The causative agents of HFRS are members of the Hantavirus genus, family Bunyaviridae. Fourth serologically distinct groups of hantaviruses are represented by Hantaan (HTN), Seoul (SEO), Puumala (PUU) and Prospect Hill (PH) viruses. Major reservoir host for these viruses, respectively, are Apodemus (mouse), Rattus (rat), Chethrionomus (bank vole) and Microtus (meadow vole). Hantaan, Seoul and Puumala are associated with severe, moderate and mild forms of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, respectively; while Prospect Hill virus has not been shown to be associated with any human disease. In addition to these viruses, at least four other genetically distinct hantaviruses have been described lately: Thailand virus, Dobrava virus, Thottapalayam virus... |
