This dissertation focuses on the chemical constituents and their biological activities of three plants: Elaeagnus pungens Thunb. (Elaeagnaceae). Thuidium kcmedae Sak. (Musci: Thuidiaceae). and Nothapodytes obtusifolia (Merr.) Howard (Icacinaceae).Elaeagnus pungens is a very famous Chinese folk medicine used in the treatment of restrain lung, relieving cough, drawing asthma, etc. The chemical constituents and their biological activities in the leaves of Elaeagnus pungens were studied. Twenty one compounds were isolated, i.e., N-benzoul-L-phenylalaninol, aurantiamide acetate, lupeol, N-benzoylphenylalaninyl-N-benzoylphenylalaninate, penduletin, biondnoids A , 3, 5-dihydroxy-7, 4' - dimethoxyflavone, 3-O-methylkaempferol, 3,3'-Di-O-methylquercetin, hentriantane, kaempferol-3-O-β-D-glucoside, vomifoliol. ursaldehyde, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, β-sitosterol, oleanolic acid, caffeic acid methyl ester, methyl protocatechuate, spingic acid , p-anisic acid, and daucosterol. They were identified as sterols, triterpenes, sesquiterpenes, dipepetides. flavone. etc. Three dipepetides and one flavoneoside were isolated from Elaeagnaceae for the first time. The chemical constituents of Thuidium kanedae Sak. and biological activities of two biflavonoids isolated from this plant were investigated. Seven compounds were isolated from this plant, i.e., pentadecane, methyl β-orcinolarboxylate, β-sitosterol, stigmast-4-en-3-one, daucosterol, 3',3'''-binaringenin, and thuidin. They were identified as sterols, biflavonoids, etc. Thuidin was a new compounand. β-orcinolarboxylate was isolated from the mosses for the first time, and 3',3'" -binaringenin was newly found in Thuidiaceae. Two biflavonoids showed stronger antioxygenation effect in different oxygenation former, but they have no detectable cytotoxic activity against A-549.The chemical constituents of the roots of Nothapodytes obtusifolia and biological activities of its extracts were also investigated. Twenty six compounds were isolated from this plant. They are: physcion, chrysophanol, emodin, aloe-emodin, citreorosein, friedelin, 7-hydroxycadalin, β-amyrin, taraxerol, oleanlic aldehyde, oleanolic acid,...
