A Serial Studies Of Percutaneous Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty

Part I A New Simplified Method for Calculating Mean Mitral Valve Pressure GradientPurpose: To find a simple, reliable method for calculating mean mitral valve pressure gradient (MVPG). Materials and methods: The hemodynamic data from 105 patients who underwent percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty were analyzed to test the validity of the formula: MVPG = MLAP - LVEDP/2. The standard MVPG was derived from planimetry of the area enclosed by diastolic left atrial and ventricular pressure tracings divided by left ventricular diastolic filling period. Results: The standard MVPG was 13.23 ±7.42 mmHg, the estimated MVPG by the new method was 13.50 ± 7.93 mmHg, there was no significant difference between the values by these two methods ( P > 0.05). Linear regression analysis showed there was a close correlation between the standard MVPG and the estimated MVPG ( r = 0.975, P < 0.001). Conclusion: The simplified method for calculating mean mitral valve pressure gradient is simple and reliable, it can be used in clinical practice.Part II The Safety and Efficacy of Reusing Inoue Balloon Catheters for Percutaneous Balloon Mitral ValvuloplastyPurpose: To study the safety and efficacy of reused Inoue balloon catheters for percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty. Materials and methods: 195 patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis were enrolled in this study, there were 146 females and 49 males, aged 39.09 ± 9.88 years. New Inoue balloon catheter was used in 125 patients (group 1) and reused Inoue balloon catheter (reused for only one time) in 70 (group 2).
