Background and AimsUlcerative Colitis is a chronic inflammation of colonic mucosa, immune phenomena are credited as playing a major role in its pathogenesis, and abnormal immune status in intestinal mucosa were found more predominant than those in peripheral blood. The Thl/Th2 subsets imbalance are involved in pathogenesis of the diseases, determination of Thl/Th2 status may be helpeful to elucidate their pathogenesis and to make way in immune prevention and treatment. At present, it has been well accepted that Crohn's disease is Th1-predominant, whereas in UC has not been determined. As one of the two main mechanisms for cell-mediated cytotoxicity, whether perform pathway is involved in the pathogenesis of UC , need to be elucidated. In this study, the proportion of lymphocyte subsets in LPMC and PBMC , expression of perform in mucosal lymphocytes of UC were investigated in order to elucidate Thl/Th2 status and role of perform in the pathogenesis of UC .Material and MethodsTen pieces of biopsy specimens were obtained from active UC mucosa in 19 patients. Normal mucosa from 12 colon cancer cases served as control. LPMC were isolated from these specimens by modified EDTA-collagenase method. Two color, three color flow cytometry were employed to detect percentages of...
