Esophageal cancer is a common cancer in China. Although some advance has been achieved in early diagnosis ,surgical treatment, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the long term outcome for patients with esophageal cancer is still very poor because of high incidence of recurrence or metastasis. Therefore, it's needed urgently to develop new strategies for treatment of esophageal cancer to improve the long term outcome. The growth and metastasis of solid tumors is strictly dependent on angiogenesis. Thus antiangiogenic therapy is postulated to be an attractive approach for tumor treatment. In this study, major angiogenic factors of human esophageal cancer were first determined . Based on the study on the angiogenic factors, antiangiogenic therapy of esophageal cancer was studied.Study on major mediators of angiogenesis in esophageal cancer:The expression of several major mediators of angiogenesis including VEGF. MMP-9 and Endostatin was examined in 56 human esophageal cancer tissues by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry respectively. The results indicated expression of VEGF in the tumorous tissues was higher than that in the nontumorous tissues , VEGF expression was significantly correlated with neovascularization in the tumors. Expression of VEGF and MVD(mean vessel density) in the tumors were significantly associated with advance and metastasis of esophageal cancer, which demonstrated that expression of VEGF played an important role in angiogenesis and metastasis of...
