Bolbostemma paniculatum[Maxim.] Franquet, distributed in Henan, Shanxi and Shandong Province et al., is a Chinese cucurbitaceous folk medicine named as "Tu Bei Mu" which is often used for the treatment of tumors as well as for detoxication. It has also been used to cure warts and inflammatory diseases et al.From the bulb of Bolbostemma paniculatum[Maxim.] Franquet, 40 constituents were isolated by all kinds of chromatographical techniques (such as silica gel chromatography, sephadex LH-20 and HPLC etc.). 2 novel compounds, along with 26 known compounds were identified on the base of UV, IR, NMR,2DNMR, physical properties and chemical correlations. The novel compounds are isocucurbitacin D 25-O-acetate(11) and isomatol -mannoside(21). The known compounds are β-sitosterol(1) , stigmasta-7,22,25-triene-3-ol(2), stigmasterol(3), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde(4), daucosterol(5), daucosterol palmitate(6) , β-sitosterol palmitate(7) , Palmitic acid(8), p-hydroxybenzoic acid(9), maltol(10), cucurbitacinE(12), cucurbitacin B(13), emodin(14), physcion(15), uridine(16), Methyl-α-D-fructofuranoside(17) , Methyl-β-D-fructofuranoside (18) , alanine(19) , n-butyl-β-D-fructopyranoside(20), glucose(22), thymidine(23), D-fructose(24), maltose(25), saccharose(26), D-sorbitol (27)and mannitol(28),among which compounds 1,3,4,5,6, 7,9,13,15,16,17,18,19,20,22,23,24,27,28 are obtained for the first time from the bulb of Bolbostemma paniculatum[Maxim.] Franquet.compounds 11 were further tested for cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (L929, Hela and A375), it showed good cycotoxicity against one of the three human cancer cell lines, A375.It also showed certain cycotoxicity against the other two human cancer cell lines.We consulted in the literature of chemical constituents and pharmacological activities in and abroad in recent years, overviewed the research results all-around, provide the references for the researches on Bolbostemma paniculatum[Maxim.] Franquet.
