Asparagus cochinchinensis, which is a Chinese folk medicine, is the tuberous root of Asparagus cochinchinensis (Lour.) Merr., and it is often used for treatments of fever, cough, hemoptysis, diabetes, constipation, swollen and throat pain. It is distributed in many provinces of China. It is reported that only a few substances such as β-sitosterol, some amino acids, some monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides, and several furostanol saponins have been isolated untile present time. Further studies on the Asparagus cochinchinensis led to the isolation of thirty compounds from the ethanolic extract of the tuberous root. The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of chemical and spectral analysis (IR, MS, GC, 1H-NMR,13C-NMR and 2D-NMR) .They were:β-sitosterol(AC1)β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranosile(AC2)n-ethatriacontanoic acid(AC3)palmic acid(AC4)9-heptacosylene(AC5)sarsasapogenin(AC6)iosgenin(AC7)3-O-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1-4)]-β-D- glucopyranoside-(25S)-5β-spirostan-3β.ol(AC8)(25S)-26-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-5β-furost-20(22)-en-3β,26-diol-3-O-[α-L- rhamnopyranosyl(1-4)]-β-D- glucopyranoside(AC9)(25R)-26-O-β-D- glucopyranosyl-furost-5,20-diene-3β,26-diol-3-O-[α-L- rhamnopyranosyl(1-2)]-[(β-D- glucopyranoside-(1-4))-α-L- rhamnopyranosyl-(1-4)] -β-D- glucopyranoside(AC10)(25S)-26-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-5β-furost-20(22)-en-3β,15,26-triol-3-O-[α-L- rhamnopyranosyl(1-4)]-β-D- glucopyranoside(AC11)(25R)-26-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-5β-furost-20(22)-en-3β,26- diol-3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-2)]- β-D- glucopyranoside(AC12)(25R)-26-O-β-D- glucopyranosyl-furost-5,20-diene-3β,26-diol-3-O-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1-2)]-[α-L- rhamnopyranosyl-(1-4)] -β-D- glucopyranoside(AC13)Among them , AC9,AC10,AC11,AC12 are new compounds. Other compounds, except AC1 and AC13, were obtained from this medicine for the first time.In this paper, we tested the antifungi, antitumor, cardiovascular,cerebral vascular bioactivity and hepatic fibrogenesis bioactivity of some compounds and total furostanol saponins. Compound AC8 showed the antifungi and antitumor activity, compound AC9 and total furostanol saponins have cardiovascular and cerebral vascular bioactivity. We also found that total furostanol saponins can markedly inhibit the multiplication of HSC-T6 and NIH-3T3.In this paper, the extraction methods of total furostanol saponins from Asparagi radix was also studied .ELSD-HPLC has been established to determine the quantity of AC9 in total furostanol glycoside in this paper.
