As a traditional Chinese medicine, YSD had a long history to cure diabetes. There were many records of archaic recipes and curatorial laws. But now the clinical applications of YSD to cure diabetes were fewer, and the reports of related research were infrequent as well. There were two reasons. Firstly dosage forms of YSD were mainly pills or powders in archaic recipes, while the modernistic clinical applications and preparations are mostly medicinal broths or decoctions. As the active matters were intangible, the extracted ones may be invalid components, making it hard to ensure their curative effects. Secondly, whether YSD is prepared as pills, powders, medicinal broths or decoctions, it is difficult to avoid them from taking in a great deal of tannin. When the tannic acid is absorbed in vivo, it is decomposed to gallate and pyrogallic acid, which could conduce to focal necrosis of liver cells in a result of long-term administration. Because of such a adverse reaction, the clinical applications of YSD are badly restricted. Therefore, to look for antihyperglycemic compositions of YSD, to extract, purify and enrich them, are of great importance to the traditional Chinese medicine...
