In stomatology, many cure and prevention processes involve bone metabolism. Jaw suffers from a dynamic bone remodelling, which includes not only bone formation affected by osteoblasts, but also bone resorption by osteoclasts. When osteoclast increases amount or activity, resulting in more bone resorption, otherwise, more bone formation. These changes would create tooth loose or difficulty in tooth eruption. In course of osteoclastic resorption, vacuolar proton pump in osteoclasts activated by various stimulating factors, mainly stresses, transports hydrogen ion to acidify bone matrix, forming Howship's lacuna finally. Consequeltly, vacuolar proton pump in osteoclasts takes important effect in bone remodelling. However, osteoclast is a kind of terminally differentiated cell with shortcomings, such as difficulty in culture, short survival time, less amount and no cell strain and so on, which mostly restrain study in osteoclasts. At present, there are not articles about effect of flow shear stress on vacuolar proton pump mRNA in osteoclasts.[Aim] The present study investigated effect of flow shear stress on morphology and vacuolar proton pump mRNA in rat osteoclasts.
