Objective Hydroxyapatite/collagenI biomimetic composites' s structural characters, biodegradable properties, Chemical composition and crystallite size were similar to that of natural bone. Previous study about hydroxyapatite/collagenI showed that this kind of biomaterial had good biocompatibility. In recent years, some researchers found that hydroxyapatite/collagenI composites could induce new bone tissue formation in non-osseous site or environment. This kind of biomaterial have been one of the most popular areas of investigation during the past few years. Hydroxyapatite/collagenI biomimetic composites have been successfully used in long bone defects, but rarely used in biologic and biomechanic environment of spine. In order to investgate the mechanism of the hydroxyapatite/collagenI composite's biocompatibility, osteoinductivity and heterotopic bone formation ability, the biomaterials were employed as test materials in this study. Different methods were used to study the materials' s characters. For further clinical use, we had detected the enhancement of spinal fusion in rabbit in this study. Methods Hydroxyapatite were made under low temperature. After mixed with collagen I, the hydroxyapatite/collagenI...
