INTRODUCTION: Although the death rate from gastric carcinoma in the world has decreased recently, gastric carcinoma is still one of the most common carcinomas and a leading cause of death from cancer in China. Early gastric carcinoma often shows no symptoms or shows slight symptoms so that it can't be diagnosed and treated when it is still in early stage. Once clinical symptoms are evident, gastric carcinoma must be in advanced stage. It is necessary to establish a precautionarily diagnostic system to decrease the incidence of gastric carcinoma and to increase the survival rate of patients who suffer from gastric carcinoma. The emergence of DNA chip technology not only provides a strong tool for analyzing genes on a large scale, but also brings hope for diagnosing a number of possible patients by using gastric carcinoma stage-specific and histology-specific marker genes. Establishing of gastric carcinoma precautionarily diagnostic system relies on the finding of gastric carcinoma stage-specific and histology-specific marker genes.AIM: To clone differentially expressed genes between GES-1 gastric epithelial cells and SGC-7901 gastric carcinoma cells and to prepare initially precautionarily diagnostic DNA chip for gastric carcinoma.
