Objective: To detect the blood supply and collateral pathways of cerebral arteries in physiological and pathological conditions. Methods: The structures and blood flow parameters of cerebral arteries for health adult were investigated, the changes of haemodynamics in patients with internal carotid artery occlusion and subclavian steal syndrome (SSS) observed, the stenosis of the cerebral arteries diagnosed and the curative effect of intraluminal stent-assisted angioplasty evaluated by color Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS), color Doppler energy (CDE) and Contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Results:â—‹1 All parameters of cerebral arteries were changed with the rise of age and sexuality, and there are two collateral pathways of cerebral arteries in health adults. They are anterior and posterior communicating arteries (ACoA and PCoA respectively) of the circle of Willis.â—‹2 there are three collateral pathways of cerebral arteries in patients with unilateral internal carotid artery occlusion and SSS. They are collateral pathways through the ophthalmic arteries, ACoA and PCoA with unilateral internal carotid artery occlusion, through the vertebral arteries, ill-lateral PCoA and both vertebral arteries and ill-lateral PCoA with SSS. But the blood flow velocity was lower in ill-lateral than in contralateral side.â—‹3 CDUS is an accurate method for diagnosis of cerebral arterial stenosis. The blood supply was obviously improved after treatment with intraluminal stent-assisted angioplasty treatment. Conclusions: CDUS, CDE and CEUS will be efficient means for real-time analyzing the structure and function of cerebral arteries, and exactly assessing the curative effect of intraluminal stent-assisted angioplasty for intracranial stenosis.
