Insomnia refers to having difficulty in falling asleep, waking up easily and repeatedly and waking up early despite being provided with good sleep conditions and having no effects of the body problem. If it happens more than 4 nights a week and continues more than a month, a type of syndrome, abnormal function in daytime, appears because the time and quality of sleep dissatisfy the physiological demands of the body. Insomnia has become a social common problem that attracts extensive attention in the world. Thus two types of medical systems including traditional Chinese medicine and modern medicine both reinforce the study on insomnia.Although knowledge of insomnia in traditional Chinese medicine has already had a history about thousands of years, modern specialists in TCM have further research on insomnia combining with modern science and technology, the theory of insomnia is still resting on the level of disharmonious functions of five-zang viscera. Study on some objective problems is not profound enough such as pathogenesis of five-zang viscera problems resulting in insomnia, proportion and curative effect. We lack knowledge about the systemic physiological and psychological disorders of the insomniacs and have no breakthrough yet.According to the viewpoint"stomach problem resulting in disturbed sleep"in Neijing, together with research production in modern medicine, our study group puts forward that abnormal functions of the spleen and stomach are the manifestations of systemic functional disorders in a portion of insomniacs and have mutual causing, effecting and interactional relationship with insomnia. In animal experiment, we use methods of flat roof with water surroundings to deprive rats of sleep in order to copy animal models of insomnia. In the course, we discover that there are distinct differences between rats of model group and comparison group in irritability, weight increase, study and memory ability, content of neurotransmitter concerned with sleep and gastrointestinal movement in brain tissue and plasm, and content of sleep factors.Consulting neurogastrointestinal symptoms in modern medicine and traditional Chinese gastroenterology in clinical study, we have established measurement table of gastrointestinal syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine, which together with PSQI, self-established measurement table of psychological disorders, SAS, SDS and measurement table of constitution in TCM are merged into the content of the study on related factors in insomnia. We use statistic methods to analyze the related relationships between the gastrointestinal syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine and various factors of the 301 insomniacs in clinical study. Results indicate: there are 80.40% insomniacs with gastrointestinal syndrome. Furthermore, gastrointestinal syndrome has close relationships with course of disease, various scores in PSQI, scores in SAS and SDS, traditional Chinese psychological disorder state, etiology in TCM and other factors. Thus it is proved that quite a portion of insomniac with abnormal functions in spleen and stomach has systemic physiological and psychological disorders, which builds the basis for the further study on insomnia.
