Medical professionals through history believe that the Treatise on Febrile Diseases can instruct treatment of all diseases. This paper probes into the relationship between the spleen and stomach thinking of the Treatise on Febrile Diseases and the Treatise on the Spleen and Stomach. Our main objective is to analyze the improvement in the latter treatise compared to the former, especially the "treatise on yin fire" and "treatise on primordial qi of the spleen and stomach" of the latter treatise. These two complete the treatment in the Treatise on Febrile Diseases in the field of internal injury. In diagnosis, there is also some development in the Treatise on Differentiation of External and Internal Injuries. In this book, differentiation of the yin syndrome and the yang syndrome served as a main basis to differentiate internal injury from external affection. Some of the precise methods include differentiation of coldness and heat, palm and dorsum of hand, mouth and nose, deficiency and abundance of qi,muscle, joints and limbs, etc. All these have laid a sturdy foundation for the theory of internal injury. In treatment, the Treatise on Febrile Diseases is extensive in exopathic affections while incomplete in internal injuries caused by improper diet and over-fatigue. From the foundations of the Treatise on Febrile Diseases,Li Dong Yuan emphasized further on the importance of "regulating the spleen and stomach" in therapeutics. In addition, he elaborated from the aspects of principle, way, formula, and medicine. The principles of "tonifying the spleen and stomach","purging yin fire",and "invigorating vital function" mentioned by Li Dong Yuan were supported by many medical professionals in later generations. These have laid the foundation for his position as father of the school of invigorating the earth spleen. After probing the pattern of development and evolution of formulae,we discovered that Li Dong Yuan inherited and developed the principles of formula in the Treatise of Febrile Diseases from two aspects, theoretical and practical. He made the clinical use of classical prescriptions more complete and practical. As support to our findings,we pointed out in this paper the relationships between Zhang Zhong Jing's Lizhong Tang and Li Dong Yuan's Houpo Wenzhong Tang,Zhang Zhong Jing's Zhi Gancao Tang and Li Dong Yuan's Danggui Buxue Tang, Zhang Zhong Jing's Dahuang Huanglian Xiexin Tang and Li Dong Yuan's San Huang Wan,Zhang Zhong Jing's Maziren Wan and Li Dong Yuan's Runchang Wan,Zhang Zhong Jing's Taohua Tang and Li Dong Yuan's Kezi San,Zhang Zhong Jing's Xuanfu Daizheshi Tang and Li Dong Yuan's Tong You Tang.As Mr. Shi Jin Mo,a famous doctor, constantly teaches his students and followers,"When doubtful and miscellaneous diseases are encountered during clinical practice,we should -----and look into the spleen and stomach." This is nothing less than opening a good stream of thought for clinical practice. |
