Given the status of arthouse cinema in Shanghai the blank space, the paper aims to study the survival and development of arthouse cinema in European and American cities. Concerning the cultural facts of Shanghai and terms to city’s diverse prosperity aspect of cinema, the paper especially focuses on the arthouse cinema in opening up the public cultural horizons, and how to shape the city’s image in the cultural and creative diversity.Into the twenty-first century, in the city, how to be more objective, more rational strategy to develop film culture, support the arthouse cinema operations, rather than the city’s cinemas will be treated as business profit machine? Under the premise of a balanced development of economy and culture, and through the culture of the city, how to develop arthouse cinema a more long-term blueprint to follow the government law, the mission to fulfill the film culture and education, as well as the establishment of arts and cultural diversity of cinema, make the city become a crucial role of urban cinema ecology with self-sufficiency and self-discipline?In this paper, for the arthouse cinema in the cities like Paris and New York City, etc., the author explores the relationship between cinema and the city, the cultural and economic mission, as well as in the city’s history, arthouse cinema as the most essential and important images of cultural transmission unit, so as the cultural construction of Shanghai city, especially the theory and experiences to provide practical and relevant developments boost the popularity of arthouse cinema concept.The paper analyses the most representative of the arthouse cinema in Paris, New York City and other major cities, with the existing pattern of historical development, and their enormous influence of urban culture, the way in which the case studies will be the first arthouse cinema Cinematheque franchise in Paris and the first arthouse cinema New Yorker Theater in New York City a separate research, positioning the cinema in the whole urban ecology as well as a deep impact on the urban culture, etc. And thus emphasizes that the arthouse cinema in the city is different from short-term profit target commercial cinema, but also with their artistic pursuits as "seventh art" is more about aesthetic features and spiritual demands. However, due to the global expansion of Hollywood entertainment industry, arthouse cinemas in most parts of the United States. Europe and Asia have experienced a very difficult period, but with the economic development matures, around the world cities are more clearly aware of the key role in the spread of urban culture and education of the next generation of art films.The innovative points in this paper are to study the film with its influence effectively combines urban culture, and different from research "in the movie image of the city" by a large number of scholars, but to focus on the concept of arthouse cinema as a crucial proposition for the city, from the history of arthouse cinema in such developped cities like Paris and New York City, the most representative of arthouse cinema case studies, based on urban cinema ecology, considering with the economics and cultural influence of cinema including large commercial chains, trying to further explore the possibility for arthouse cinema development in Shanghai and therefore the cultural influence on the city.
