Chinese art is called ’the art of lines’. It has the characteristics of living lines, which played a magnificent role in Chinese painting. To make a general survey of Chinese painting, we can get that lines living because of the understanding on the strokes, so it does on figure painting. To figure painting, actually, the line is much more important than the others as being a fundamental factor. Being performed so differently throughout the figure painting proceeding, lines have a necessary to be figured out a frame which makes it could be dipctied out much more clearly. And more, we could also dig out more information to prove the traditional view of ’calligraphy and painting share the same root’ while tracing the birth of Chinese painting and its special tool, when we probably get some hints. During the history, Chinese figure painting came through many periods such as the pre-Qin, Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, southern and Northern dynasties, sui, Tang and later, it has indeed developed a variety of different qualities.In pre-Qin period, line acted as decoration in painting patterns and images appearing on ritual or daily items such as bronzes, lacquer. When in Han dynasty, it became increasingly fine with showed on silk and brick or stone portraits. Be effected of Buddhist art in Wei, Jin, southern and Northern Dynasties period, it raised and developed a local Chinese style. To summarize the history in the Tang dynasty, figure painting brought itself into a pinnacle. Later, figure painting went widely more, various types of paintings ask more on’the line’, which is the first to modeling. According to Xuanhe Huapu, the vision and a picture copybook from the Northern Song dynasty painting, this article classify the figure painting, religious painting, and portraits in the selection of some of the most representative artists, aimed to study, line as the most fundamental method in the development of advanced figure painting went along on which directions, and to find some reasonable keys.This text primary to figure out the "sources" and "branches" of lines in figure painting from documents, focusing on the large volumes of documents, combined with the creative experience of my own.
