There are red petroglyphs all over the provinces in Southwest China. Guizhou Zhenfeng Red Rock Cliff Painting is belonged to red petroglyphs of the Southwest China. Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau is a typical karst landscape.Almost all southwest cliff paintings were drawn on karst rock cliffs, showing many common features in the selection of cliff painting spots. There are many similarities between the environment, modeling, color of Zhenfeng Red Rock Cliff Painting and that of Southwest petroglyphs, but Zhenfeng Red Cliff Painting has its own uniqueness. By far, among the cliff paintings found in Guizhou, it is the largest in size and has the largest number of individual images, the richest contents, the most diverse color phases and hues, the most comprehensive image types, the longest duration of creating, as well as the largest number of ancient nationalities participating in its creation.Cliff paintings within Guizhou province are mainly located in the Yangtze River and Pearl River. Their distribution pattern is related to the migration routes and settlements within Guizhou of the four ancient lineages in Southwestern Yunnan, which results in the obvious regional and national characters of each cliff painting spot in Guizhou. The distribution features of nationalities within the province are reflected on the images of each cliff painting spots. One common feature of cliff paintings within Guizhou province is that the individual image is not large, with the size of nearly 90 percent of the images varying from 5 cm to 50 cm. Most of the images have a size varying from 10 cm to 30 cm. The contents of the cliff paintings are mainly hunting, herding and folk sacrifice. Most of the images are animals and people. Red line tone is its main color. The characters all have distinct national features. So far, Zhenfeng Red Rock Cliff Painting is the only cliff painting spot in Guizhou province where the ancient four ethnic lineages in Southwestern China all participated in its creation and whose creating period is the longest in duration. The oldest cliff painting dates back to at least 6,000 years ago and interprets the developing and maturation process of Chinese line modeling based arts. Therefore, Zhenfeng Red Rock Cliff Painting has high research values in areas of history, nationality, folk custom, religion, clothing, arts and other subjects and is a precious heritage of the whole human race.So far, no scholars have carried out a comprehensive and systematic framing, classification and staging of Red Rock Cliff Painting, or analyzed and studied its color, overlying relationship, creating nationality and year of creation. This study aims at filling the research gaps of Zhenfeng Red Rock Cliff Painting in Guizhou cliff paintings research. Based on the statistics, sorting and preliminary research of the basic materials of Guizhou Zhenfeng Red Rock Cliff Painting, this dissertation employs research methods and theories of anthropology, nationality history, archaeology,arts and other subjects and tries to do a preliminary exploration into the framing, classification, staging, color and overlying relationship, creating nationality and year of creation.During the research process of this dissertation, the author compares and analyzes cliff painting images by combining field research with interview materials, compares and analyzes cliff painting contents with the help of field research and interviews, nationality history and historical records, compares and analyzes images related to cliff paintings with the help of archaeological excavation materials.The use of data, chart statistics, image contrasts and other approaches makes this research more intelligible and digestible.Main research contents and procedures:This dissertation first analyzes the natural and cultural environment in which Zhenfeng Red Rock Cliff Paintings were created. The following part is a survey and analysis of cliff painting spots, including image naming, framing, statistics of image individual numbers, image types analysis, analysis of the relationship between image color and year of creation, overlying relationship of images, analysis of its cultural connotations by interpreting the characteristic parts of cliff painting images.The final part of this dissertation analyzes the relationship between Zhenfeng Red Rock Cliff Painting and the cliff paintings within Guizhou Province, exploring the nationality, locality, changes in livelihoods and economic models, the artistic evolution processes reflected by the red rock cliff paintings.
