Jealousy, a self-conscious emotion, mainly refers to negative emotions people experience when an important relationship is under threat or losing. Jealousy plays a vital role in motivation and regulation of social adaptiveness and social competence. Based on teasing out the existing theoretical and empirical studies on children’s jealousy, the purpose of the thesis is to explore the structure, developmental characteristics and related affecting factors of three-to-six-year-old children’s jealousy.Study 1:The study on the structure of children’s jealousy with 3 to 6 years old. Based on the theoretical construction of jealousy and the qualitative analytical results of opening questionnaire about children’s jealousy for parents and teachers, the study found a descriptive structure of children’s jealousy. On the basis of this result, we draw up a rating questionnaire about children’s jealousy for teachers containing 33 items and asked teachers to complete the questionnaire. We finally found children’s jealousy structure was composed of a threat to a relationship and a threat to one’s self-esteem by qualitative analytical methods, including item analysis, exploratory factory analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. We used reliability (internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, split-half reliability, rater consistency reliability) and validity (content validity, structure validity, construct validity) index to test the questionnaire.Study 2:The developmental tendency and characteristics of three-to-six-year-old children. In order to investigate the developmental tendency and sex difference of children’s jealousy in the view of the two components of jealousy, we adopted quantitative methods including the rating questionnaire about children’s jealousy for teachers and scenario-simulated experiments with children. We separately studied jealousy behavior of children from junior, middle and senior classes using qualitative methods.Study 3:The relationships among inhibitory control, the theory of mind and four-to-six-year-old children. A mediation effect test was used to examine the relationships among inhibitory control, the theory of mind and children’s jealousy through scenario-simulated experiments, inhibitory control and the theory of mind experimental tasks.Based on the analysis and discussion of the above researches, the thesis comprehensively discusses the structure of children’s jealousy, the developmental tendency and characteristics and the related affecting factory of children’s jealousy. The main conclusions were drawn as follows:1.The rating questionnaire about children’s jealousy for teachers we developed has good reliability and validity. It is a fine measurement tool to test the development of Chinese children’s jealousy.2.Three-to-six-year-old children’s jealousy consists of a two-dimension structure, namely a threat to a relationship and a threat to one’s self-esteem.3.Three-to-six-year-old children’s jealousy level demonstrates a downward trend with age. Boys’jealousy levels are higher than girls’.4. Junior children belong to the self-feeling type, middle children belong to the other—elf feeling type, and senior children belong to the authority feeling type.5.Inhibitory control has a direct predictive power of children’s jealousy and it has an indirect effect on children’s jealousy through the theory of mind which acts as an intervening variable.
