As a scholar engaged in culture and education,Ms. Qi Bangyuan bounced around various places and witnessed the war against Japanese’s occupation and the transformation of the Chinese society since 1930 s. Qi’s autobiography Juliu He, or The Grand River, has recorded the history of the Republic of China from a personal point of view. This paper argues that Juliu He, as a kind of literature of personal memory, has made a great effort to rebuilt an intellectual culture in the postwar Taiwan. Juliu He also shows us the courage to resume the task of investigating the writing of literature, to deliver its own energy, to memorize the lives of common people, and to find a way of solutions for the narrative of histories. In today’s context of globalization, after the waves of theory shocks, the writing of history is especially significant and that’s why when Juliu He published in 2009, the book has received a great of reviews from the circles of intellectuals in Taiwan and mainland China, with its concise harmony, tolerance of soulful style widely acclaimed. However, how the author to restructure its direct and indirect experience, what’s the relationship between the style of language and its meaning of memory ? These are what the paper concern about. The paper will also discuss Ms. Qi’s personal memory in the history of the Republic of China, as well as her experieces living in the different areas of China. After Ms.Qi moved to Taiwan, how does she to develop and engage in education according to her cultural heritage and identity is also a key problem. Different spatial and temporal life and work experience are connected in series, it is a personal testimony of history, and also is the historical gifts to individuals.
