A Study Of Modern Chinese Individualist Literary Trends

Individualism has been introduced to China in the late Qing Dynasty,and it become the ethos in “May Fouth” period.As a heterogeneous culture,individualism has different value orientation with Chinese traditional culture,individualism has connotations about individual freedom,personal liberation,independence of personality and so on,Chinese traditional culture emphasizes obedience on ethics-based “person”,for the reason that there are fundamental difference between individualism and Chinese traditional culture.The “New Youth” appeared in the “May Fouth” New Culture Movement began to criticize the Confucian ideology of the mainstream of traditional culture,they pointed out that Chinese traditional culture repressed indivldual,causing the sense of servility and obedient personality of Chinese people,so the New Youth advocated that people should destroy Chinese traditional culture and old family system,in addition,they promoted the liberation and independence of personality,and made a great effort to advocated individualism.The spreading of individualism in China changed the world view and value of “May Fourth” writers,and they regarded individualism as a powerful ideological weapon to enlightenment society and liberation of the individual,therefore,a large number of individualistic literary works emerged in the “May Fourth” New Culture Movement, so that the individualism literary trends become a prominent feature of Modern Chinese Literature.Under the influence of the individualism,Modern Chinese Literature present the unique ideology and aesthetic taste of writers from the evil clan system,awakening individual consciousness of the youth to the personal life experience of creating subject,original of the literary form.In this paper,Modern Chinese Literature will be as the object to be researched,and in order to present the individualism literary trends,and individualism literary works will be analysised meticulously in the paper.The emerging of individualism literary trends means that the new generation intellectuals appearing in “May Fouth” new culture movement pursuit the personality and the freedom.individualism literary encourage the young generation against the authority of clan and father,call out the youth out of the family and pursuit of freedom.However,individualism literary trends was very difficult to be accepted because of the the special circumstances of modern China.The “personal freedom” concept of individualism that The New Culture Movement preaching is based on the freedom and democracy ideas,the concept of supremacy of rights of the Western society,and the “personal freedom” concept is guaranteed by democratic social system.Unlike western society,modern China was facing crisis situation of frequent wars,with revolution surging,and the urgency of national liberation press over the need for individual liberation,When the Anti-Japanese war broke out,the whole country of Chian was in the war.in the vital moment of the nation’s life and death, individualism seemed to be outdated.And also nothing important meaning to the country into the war.Therefore,individualism become the targert of criticism and marginalized at this time,the debate of individualism literature with left-wing literature and the Anti-Japanese war literature showed that individualism was in a predicament.With the rise of the revolution,left-wing literature emphasis on the limitations of individual freedom and the obedience to the collective.individualism literary trends lost its attraction gradually in the constantly criticism,and quit the stage of history eventually.This paper explore the fate of individualism literary trends in Modern Chinese Literature through its process of development, present and withdraw.The main part of the paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter discusses the awaking of individual consciousness with the individualism was introduced into China,on this basis, individualism literary trends depicts a young generation against the old clan system and resist the arranged marriages by parents, the youth pursuit individual happiness and personal liberation, this means that the youth turn from the traditional social ethics of “person” into a individualism ideology “individual”,and in this paper the author try to analysis the different between the China traditional culture’s “individual” to western society’s “individual”.The second chapter analyzes the life experience of the writers,and specifically prospect the relationship between individualism and the life experience of the writers. individualism enlightenment the consciousness of individual,so the writers experience the longliness,hopelessness, anxious, sentimental,leisurely and comfortable and so on, thus the Modern Chinese Literature showing the life experience in a variety.The third chapter discusses the relationship between individualism and humanitarianism,and try to analyze humanitarianism contains individualism in Modern Chinese Literature,by this the third chapter display the relationship between individualism and humanitarianism in Modern Chinese Literature.The forth chapter discusses the literature form and language change of Modern Chinese Literature,and it attemps to exploer the “self” and “individual”,thereby further propest the individualism literary trends.The fifth chapter discuss the situation of individualism in Modern Chinese Literature,and reflect on the contradictions,conflicts and predicament of individualism literary trends,and review how the individualism literary trends was marginalized gradually in the process of conflict with the left-wing literature and the Anti-Japanese war literature.
