The “Literature Revolution” broke out in1917has been regarded as aline that divides Chinese classic poetry and new poetry. The economic, political andcultural revolution as well as western trends of thought in literature and art has laidfoundations for the poetry revolution and the establishment of Chinese new poetry.Generally speaking, Chinese new poetry mainly developed during1917to1949,which breeds plenty of poets of different styles and genres. The development ofChinese new poetry diversifies the Chinese art stage in the short thirty years byintegrating the western trends of artistic thoughts. The period from1917to1927undoubtedly was regarded as the early revolutionary phase of Chinese new poetry, and the greatest achievement of this phase lies not in its production of unaccountablenumber of works but in its breakthrough in traditional literature. Hu hi, Wen Yiduoand Guo Moruo, known as the outstanding representative poets of this phase, devotedtheir enthusiasm to the in-depth research in new poetry under the influence of westerntrends of literature. For example, Hu advocated the popularization of vernacularwriting of poems under the influence of Dewey’s “Pragmatism”; Guo, the spokesmanof western Romanism, promoted self-expression and demanded “Liberation of PoetryForms”; Wen proposed “Three Beauties” theory and reaffirmed the meter and rhythmof poems, which made the perfect modern new poetry that consists of modernlanguage, contents and forms. The early Chinese modern poetry thus graduallydeveloped into the Chinese new poetry in real essence, therefore, the research of theefforts of these three great poets would greatly revealed the process of revolution ofChinese new poetry and the decisive influence of the western trends of artisticthoughts and literature.
