Chinese and Korean contemporary satirical novel refers to satirical novels which was produced in 1971-1949 (China) and 1910-1945 (Korea). For China and Korea, it was a specific historical period that barbarism and civilization, evil and justice, darkness and brightness were at a stalemate. Facing this kind of society, satirical novelists both in two countries decide to set out a deadly struggle with domestic and overseas reactionary rulers. During this special time, Chinese and Korean contemporary satirical novelists make a meaningful achievement which is worthy of our times by absorbing the essence of ancient satirical literature from different countries, accepting exotic satirical literature theory, theme and technique of expression.In this paper, with the reference of Chinese and Korean traditional satiric arts, the application of western and Chinese and Korean contemporary satire (humorous) theory gives an all-round analysis of their development, thinking, narrative technique, and aesthetic characteristics. On this account, an objective and comprehensive understanding of Chinese and Korean contemporary satirical novel will show up.The following parts make up the whole paper:In the introduction of chapter 1, one has suggested the object and method of research of this thesis by studying on Chinese and Korean contemporary satirical literature that has been achieved until today and about history of Korean satirical novel research.In chapter 2, one has investigated the influence of periodic background, classic satirical literature, foreign satirical literature, and satire theory as development factors of Chinese and Korean contemporary satirical novel; and has inquired about development aspects of Chinese and Korean contemporary satirical novel. First, in order to understand the concept and the characteristic of satire and satirical novel, one has studied the satire theory of the west theorists, including Gilbert Highet, Arthur Pollard, Daniel Defoe, John Dryden, Claud Rawson, Gilbert Arthur Highet, etc. and has also reviewed theoretical assertion of Chinese and Korean contemporary satirical theorists, which includes Choi Jae-Seo, Han Sik, Chae Man-Sik, Lu Xun, etc.. And by investigating history of two country’s classic satirical literature, one has examined in detail about the aspects of traditional succession of Chinese and Korean contemporary satirical novel. Then, one will check the periodical background why there was massive emerges of satirical novel of this period, and how the writers of the period understand and have written literary works. Finally, one wants to check acceptance process of foreign satirical literature and satirical theory and development aspects of Chinese and Korean contemporary satirical novel minutely.Chapter 3 focuses on the multiple themes of Chinese and Korean contemporary satirical novel. It integrates political satire, moral satire, social satire and human satire to reveal the dark and rotten social reality of early twentieth century in China and Korea.In chapter 4, one has investigated about Chinese and Korean contemporary novel literature’s satirical narratological, rhetorical techniques and its satirical effect. Satirical novel has its purpose to criticize and to correct society of the time, and at the same time, it’s required to criticize and offense deviously and indirectly. In order to cleverly attract the reader’s attention, and let them understand and be persuaded by the writer’s intention and the given theme, satire needs distinctive formal system, which is called narrative skill. Narrative skill of satirical novel that aims communication process can be divided into three types; first type is to adjust the distance of narration; second type is to use oral discussion; and third type is to strengthen dialogue. Then one has investigated about rhetoric. Satire is a method that the author uses linguistic means to achieve satirical effect. Using satire to create an satirical image (or emotion) is always without hesitation, so satire is also named as intuitive satire. This section includes rhetorical techniques like parody, irony, travesty, overstatement, metaphor, misinterpretation and analogy which are used in satire narration.In chapter 5, one has studied about esthetical style of Chinese and Korean satirical novel. First, one has investigated about the esthetical value that ’ugliness’has on satirical novel and the development aspects of ’ugliness’ in satirical novel on the basis of the theory of’esthetic of ugliness’. In the second paragraph, one has reviewed the feeling pattern of tragedical satirical novel and the aspects of tragedical esthetic through analysis of Chinese and Korean tragedical. satirical novel. Third, one has investigated feeling pattern and comical aspect through analysis of Chinese and Korean comical satirical novel. Finally, one has analyzed the reason why Chinese and Korean satirical writer’s writings has immovable esthetical style.
