An Empirical Analysis On International Competitiveness Of China’s Flower Industry

After China’s reform and opening-up, with 30 years’ development especially the rapid growth after the year 2000,China has become world’s largest flower production base an important consumption and export country, China’s flower industrial system is now transforming and extending from traditional & single flower planting to flower processing and flower production & sales’ service. Although the production capacity is expanding, compared with the Netherlands 、the Israel 、the Columbia and other countries, the output per unit acre and total yields & benefits of the industry have large gap with these countries. China has good resource endowments to improve its flower industry has great potential of domestic consumer market, has a long history of flower cultivation and rich connotation of flower culture.This paper established an index system of international competitiveness of China’s flower industry, using Trade Competitive index、Revealed comparative advantage index, International market ratio and other methods, with present situation and trends of modern world flower industry. According to the results, we know that China’s flower industry is at a disadvantage position in the world market, China’s international competitiveness still has large gap with the advanced countries. According to the theory of the Heterogeneity of Firms, the paper took production efficiency、fixed trade costs、relatively remote index as variables into the traditional gravity model, did an empirical analysis about factors affect the export of China’s Flower Seedling industry, calculated the trade potential. According to the results, traditional variables as the production acreage, the import nation’s GDP and the distance between two countries have significant influence on China’s export, technical upgrades have promoting effect on China’s export.Based on the analysis, the paper analyzed China’s flower industry chain, including production, consumption, circulation, export and other important nodes, found that China’s flower industry had been in quantity expansion period till now. So the paper tried to testify the positive role of technical progress played in promoting the export, using methods of co-integration test verified that the technical progress of flower industry have a positive correlativity and a steady equilibrium relationship with exports and trade surplus in the long run. The improvement of research & development of flower industry could promote the export, enlarge trade surplus effectively, proved that technical progress had significant influence on competitiveness of the industry. At last, the paper proposed that China’s flower industry should make appropriate arrangements of exports’ markets, promote transformation of scientific and technological achievements take full advantage of China’s unique germplasm resources and climates focus on research & development of China’s germplasm resources, pay attention to the industrial policy which could lead and support the development of the industry, foster and strengthen the flower industrial clusters and some other suggestions.
