China is a great agricultural country, so international trade of agricultural products plays asignificant role in promoting the development of agricultural economy and even the entire nationaleconomy. Improving agricultural products’ international competitiveness is an important means ofpromoting agricultural products international trade. In the resource constraints and other conditions, technical progress is an important means. Therefore, the study can be helpful to improveagricultural products’ competitiveness from the point of promoting technical progress.Based on above background, by reviewing the relevant research literature on technicalprogress, competitiveness of agricultural products and the relation between them, the study uses theTheory of Comparative Advantage, the Theory of Competitive Advantage, the Theory ofEconomic Growth, the Theory of Total Quality Management and other theories to analyze theinfluence mechanism. Then by combing with the status of agricultural technical progress andagricultural products’ competitiveness in China, the study uses quantitative analysis methods to doempirical test to analyze the extent of influence in China. At last, accounting to the theoreticalconclusion and empirical results, the study puts forward measures and some suggestions from thepoint of promoting technical progress. The main conclusions are as follows:Firstly, the theoretical conclusion shows that: technical progress via influencing pricecompetitiveness, quality competitiveness and brand competitiveness of agricultural products toinfluences the competitiveness of agricultural products, and the ultimate result is the combinedeffects of the above three.Secondly, the analysis of status shows that: for the past few years, the level of agriculturaltechnical progress in China shows a fluctuant and declining trend, and the investment ofagricultural research funds and researchers, agricultural extension and laborers’ quality are the important factors to influence agricultural technical progress; China’s total trade volume ofagricultural products shows that China has become a large trade nation of agricultural products, butthe competitiveness indexes show that China is not a major trade power of agricultural products.Thirdly, the empirical results show that: technical progress influences the competitiveness ofagricultural products significantly and positively in China. Although technical progress in the shortterm may weaken it, but from the long-term perspective, technical progress plays a long-term rolein promoting it in China.Fourthly, the study makes some recommendations to promote agricultural products’competitiveness in China from the point of promoting technical progress. The recommendationsare about technical progress’ obtaining, direction and transformation.
