With the increasing intense challenges of global competition and resource constraint, the development of high value-added and strong competitive emerging industries becomes a strategic priority choice in various countries. High-end equipment manufacturing(HEM) industry is one of the seven strategic emerging industries in China, which combines traditional equipment manufacturing industry and the high-end technology industry, with high-end technology and value chain characteristics. The development of HEM industry is an important driver to promote industrial transformation and upgrading, which is vital to the comprehensive competitiveness of the equipment manufacturing industry chain. Its development has important strategic significance to accelerate the change of the economic growth mode and transit into a manufacturing powerhouse.Innovation is an important source of sustainable competitive advantage in firms. Social technology system theory proposes that organizational innovation(OI) and technical innovation(TI) are both of great significance in the survival and development of firms. However, it is quite common that high input of innovation brings low output. Especially in some firms, innovation becomes a burden of resource consumption rather than a driving force of firms’ development. During firms’ innovation practices, the implementation of either OI or TI will have great impacts on the other. It is of cruciall practical significance to explore the coordination and compatibility of OI and TI. The analysis and measurement of OI and TI and their fit is the key of in-depth exploration of the complex interactive relationship between OI and TI.Through the review of the related research on the measurement of innovation, the fit relationship of OI and TI, as well as the influence factors of firm’s characteristics on the fit between OI and TI, based on innovation theory, fit theory, modularity theory, social-technical system theory, upper echelons theory, resource based view, leadership theory and contingency theory, combining with mathematical modeling and statistical method, taking HEM firms as the empirical research objects, it studies the status measurement of OI, TI and their fit. The main contents include:This study analyzes the characteristics of HEM firms and describes the status of innovation from innovation rate dimension and innovation speed dimension as well as proposes the measurement methods of organizational innovation status and technical innovation status homogeneously. Based on the Oslo Mannual published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD), this study designs the scale of OI and TI and confirms their constitution by CFA(confirmatory factor analysis) method. Through combined weights method, it measures the status of OI and TI and their elements.Based on the ‘mirrioring hypothesis”of modularity theory, social-technical system theory, fit theory, complex adaptive systems theory and innovation theory, this study analyzes the implications, characteristics and systematic constitution of the fit between OI and TI. From the constitutional level, behavioral level and output level, we demonstrate the structural fit dimension, behavioral fit dimension and effectiveness fit dimension of OI and TI. Based on the innovation status measurement of OI, TI and their elements, all the third dimensions above are measured through coupling degree model, “organizational lag” model and fuzzy synthetic evaluation model. The comprehensive measurement model of the status of fit between OI and TI is constructed too.Based on upper echelons theory, resource based view, leadership theory and contingency theory, this study analyzes the impacts of manager’s characteristics, organizational characteristics and environmental characteristics on the fit between OI and TI, proposes the theoretical model and the corresponding hypothesis. Through reviewing the relative literature and scales, this study designs the scales of the constructs, this study verifies the theoretical model through the PLS(partial least squares) structural equation model method using Smart PLS software. After the reliability analysis, validity analysis and common method bias analysis, this paper verifies manager’s characteristics and organizational characteristics impacts on the status of the fit between OI and TI in the main effects model as well as the interaction effects model with the addition of environmental uncertainty. BY dividing the environmental uncertainty into two groups, it further verifies the impacts of manager’s characteristics and organizational characteristics on the fit between OI and TI. The empirical results are discussed too. This study chooses one aerospace equipment manufacturing firm X as a case study. Bsed on the theoretical analysis, measurement model and empirical results above, it analyzes the OI status, TI status and the status of fit between OI and TI. Combining the practice in firm X, it proposes some suggestions to promote the fit between OI and TI from the implementation process of OI and TI, manager’s level as well as organizational level. The homogeneous dimensions and measurement method of OI and TI enrich the empirical research area of firm innovation; the fit status measurement model of OI and TI based on the structural fit dimension casts light upon the complex connections between different innovation types; the influences of manager’s characteristics, organizational characteristics and environmental uncertainty characteristics on the fit status of OI and TI expand the studies in the complex interaction relationship of OI and TI. These research achievements in innovation area are beneficial to clarify the innovation activities implementation and provide the theoretical and practical reference to promote the fit between OI and TI for HEM firms.
