Witness Building The "Bird's Nest": Its Concepts, Technology And Bonds In Our Time

The "Bird's Nest", National Stadium of China (the main stadium of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games), is a piece of important contemporary architectural work in Beijing, China, and even the world. It not only witnessed the successful hosting of Beijing Olympic Games, but also became a highlight of Beijing urban construction, and played an important role of inspiration and upgrade in contemporary architectural design and related technologies development.The "Bird's Nest" was born through a long and arduous journey, was the creation and design outcome of architects and engineers, was the discussing and disputing object of varieties people, was the convergence result of political, social, cultural, technological, economic and other factors, was one of the most unique architectural events in the context of contemporary China.The author, as the Chinese principal of "Bird's Nest" proposal design cooperation and the Chinese design host of the project of National Stadium, to give an account, summary and evaluation of this super-building's birth in areas such as exceptional process, design philosophy, method operation, technology innovation and bonds in our time, has specific and special meaning, and even historical responsibility that cannot be shirked, and looks forward to achieve the following objectives: to leave the historical facts, to clarify the confusion, to discuss the issue, to provide a reference. The dissertation begins with a brief overview of the backgrounds of the times, social, urban and architectural developments in which the "Bird's Nest" was born; then continuants with a more detailed description of the birth process of the "Bird's Nest", and a summarized statement of the design philosophy and architectural method operation, and of the key technological researches and innovations of "Bird's Nest "'s design and implementation; then describes and analyzes the important academic controversies, social evaluation and political strategy that related to the "Bird's Nest", at the same time discusses and expresses the views and positions of a number of issues such as practice and theory of architectural design, evaluation and decision-making of building; after that, tries to summarizes and analyzes the "super-building"with Chinese characteristics and its happening system from a more macro perspective; finally comes a comprehensive summary and statement of the full text's contents and ideas, and in conclusion points that the comprehensive and objective evaluation of any architectural phenomenon, events, works, should only be made in a certain and sufficient historical distance.
