Nine new compounds, along with fifteen known compounds were isolated fromthe aerial part of Nervilia fordii. In addition, thirteen known compounds were isolatedfrom the roots of Pterospermum heterophyllum. The structures of the new compoundswere elucidated by means of spectroscopic methods (HR-ESI-MS,1D and2D NMR).The structures of the known compounds were identified by the comparison of theirspectroscopic and physical data with those reported in the literatures.1. Studies on Chemical Constituents of Nervilia fordiiPlant Nervilia fordii (Hance) Schltr. is an endemic source of herbal medicine inthe south of China. It has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for thetreatment of various diseases, such as tuberculosis, bronchitis and pneumonia.Petroleum ether extract and ethyl acetate extract parts from this plant showed obviouscytotoxic activities against cancer cell lines. The MeOH extract of the plant withantiviral activity on herpes simplex virus type1(HSV-1) was also reported.The further phytochemical study of90%ethanol (EtOH) extract of this plantafforded twenty-four compounds. Using extensive spectroscopic methods andphysico-chemical characters as well as hydrolysis with acid, the structures of thecompounds were elucidated as1α,3β,24ξ,25,31-pentohydroxycycloartane-28-oic acid3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (NF-1),1α,3β,24ξ,25,31-pentohydroxycycloartane-28-oicacid3-O-β-D-xylopyranoside (NF-2),1α,3β,25,31-tetrahydroxylcycloartane-28-oicacid3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (NF-3),1α,3β,24R,25-tetrahydroxycycloartane-28-oicacid3-O-β-D-xylopyranoside (NF-4),1α,3β,24R,25-tetrahydroxycycloartane-28-oicacid3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (NF-5),24ξ-O-acetoxy-1α,3β,25-trihydroxyl cycloar-tane-28-oic acid3-O-β-D-xylopyranoside (NF-6),1α,3β,25-trihydroxycycloartane-24-one-28-oic acid3-O-β-D-xylopyranoside (NF-7),1α,3β,25-trihydroxycycloartane-24-one-28-oic acid3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (NF-8),7-O-β-D-glucopyranosylapigenin- 8-C-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside (NF-9), isovitexin (NF-10),vitexin (NF-11), rhamnazin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (NF-12), hesperidin (NF-13),adenosine (NF-14),2′-deoxyadenosine (NF-15),2′-deoxythymidine (NF-16),2′-guanine deoxyribonucleoside (NF-17), nicotinic acid (NF-18), riboflavin (NF-19),L-tryptophan (NF-20),24(S/β)-dihydrocycloeucalenol-(E)-p-hydroxy cinnamate(NF-21),4-hydroxybenzonic acid (NF-22), vanillic acid (NF-23) and ferulic acid(NF-24), respectively. Among them, NF-1~NF-9are new compounds. CompoundsNF-10, NF-11, NF-13~NF-20, NF-23and NF-24were isolated from this plant forthe first time.2. Studies on Chemical Constituents of Roots of PterospermumheterophyllumPlant Pterospermum heterophyllum distributes in the south of China. It has beenused in Chinese folk medicine for the treatment of traumatic injury, psoatic strain,deadlimb and so on. Triterpenes, sterides and naphthaquinone were reported from theplant. The compound5-hydroxy-2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone from the plantshowed in vitro cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines. Therefore, it issignificant to study chemical constituents of the roots of Pterospermumheterophyllum.Thirteen compounds were obtained from further phytochemical study of90%ethanol extract of this plant. On the basis of spectroscopic and physical data withthose reported in the literatures, the stuctures of these compounds were identified asasperglaucide (PH-1),2-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenol-1-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl-(1→6)-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (PH-2), nudiposide (PH-3),(-)-epicatechin (PH-4),eriodictyol (PH-5), taxifolin (PH-6), quercetin (PH-7),3β-hydroxyurs-12-en-28-olicacid (PH-8),2β,3β-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-olic acid (PH-9), vanillic acid (PH-10),cholest-4-en-3-one (PH-11), β-daucosterol (PH-12) and β-sitosterol (PH-13).Compounds PH-1~PH-11were isolated from this plant for the first time. 3. Studies on the Anticancer Activity of Some Compounds of NerviliafordiiSome compounds isolated from Nervilia fordii were tested for their anticanceractivity in vitro against human cancer cell lines (CNE, Hep-2and HepG2) by MTTmethod.
