Stroke has the characteristic of urgent-onset and rapid-changing condition. Many reseaches have indicated that integrated schemes compound Chinese Medicine with western medicine show good curative effect. Western madicine has recognized and mature tools of scale for stroke while the "Criterion for Diagnose and Differentiantion of Syndromes of Stroke"(CDDSS) has been widely used in the field of national Chinese Medicine which contributes to the standardization of the stroke syndrom diagnosis. Owing to the difference of the two medical system theories, they emphases differed much. The NIHSS evaluates the neurological deficit and the CDDSS judges the disease casue and pathogenesis through observing, listening, asking and puls-taking and then concludes if wind, heat, phlegm, blood stasis, deficiency of qi and preponderance of yang due to deficiency of yin exist. Although the two scales both contain information of condition classification and prognosis, the relationship between them is unknown. As a result CDDSS has not been accepted by western medicine. Chinese Medicine is regard as a kind of experience medicine which restricts the application of stroke compound schemes. This research is a part of the major project "The Evaluation System of Chinese Medicine Clinic Individual Diagnosis and Treat". Adopting the clinical information collecting platform of the project we gather one thousand stroke patients' structured information of both Chinese Medicine and western mdicine including NIHSS and CDDSS. 414 cases are selected according the accepting standard. Information at five time points is used to explore the correlation of the two scale systems. Methods of cluster, correlation, multiple linear regression and classification tree are applied. The results indicate that several items of CDDSS including the sub-scale of heat and deficiency of qi have good linear correlation with NIHSS in acute stage of stroke. Hence the dynamic development and correlations of syndromes indicates the change of neurological deficit.
