During the studies on two medicinal herbs, Symplocos chinensis and CAO-HUA, rapid and effective analytical methods have been established for structural characterization of the main and trace-level constituents in bioactive extractions from these plants, respectively, based on the applications of various mass spectrometric techniques. First of all, some pure nature products sharing the same structural skeleton were studied systematically by positive and negative ion ESI-MS~n, for finding out the relationship between their structural features and the corresponding characteristic fragmentation behavior. Some novel fragmentation mechanisms were proposed, and the fragmentation rules of these known compounds were separately summarized, which can assist the effective structural analysis of compounds of the same kind. Consequently, extracts from medicinal plants were investigated by means of mass spectrometric techniques, e.g., ESI-MS, ESI-MS~n, LC-MS, LC-MS~n, and even combined with UV spectra when the related compounds possessed suitable chromophores, and the contained components of the same kind were identified. According to the above experimental route, four extracts from the two medicinal herbs were analyzed, and the possible structures of the constituents, i.e, glucuronide-type triterpenoid saponins in Symplocos chinensis and flavonol glycosides in CAO-HUA, were inferred.1. Characteristic fragmentation behavior of glucuronide-type triterpenoid saponins using etectrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry in positive and negative ion modesThe characteristic fragmentation behavior of glucuronide-type triterpenoid saponins from Symplocos chinensis, and their analogues escin Ia and Ib, were investigated in detail by positive and negative ion electrospray ionization tandem...
