Objective Allergic rhinitis is one of the most familiar diseases in the respiratory tract. It is reported that about 10 to 25 percent population suffer from allergic rhinitis all over the world in the year of 2001 by the Allergy and its Impaction on Asthma Workshop which belongs to the World Health Organization. The incidence of allergic rhinitis is rising year after year throughout the world. Numerous scholars have been devoting themselves to studying the mechanism of allergic rhinitis because of its high rate and its serious impact on people. Scores of scholars such as Mygind,N. and Storms,W.W. since 1979 have studied the mechanism of allergic rhinitis from the aspect of immunology. Although lots of the tests we can do in the laboratory can diagnose or help to diagnose this disease, we have not had a simple and effective method to measure the state of the disease, the effect of treatment or to readjust the dose of the medication. In this study we want to investigate the relationship among the expressions of leukocyte's iNOS-mRNA and nasal mucosal iNOS-mRNA and NO in plasm in this study, and to evaluate the results of the curative effect. We willconsider if it is possible to find simple and effective methods, to diagnose allergic rhinitis andjudge the clinical curative effect of treatment. Method There are three groups in this study.1. The allergic rhinitis group consists of 52 patients with persistent allergic rhinitis that includes 24 mild cases (13 male and 11 female, average age 31.56 years) and 28 moderate/severe cases (13 male and 15 female, average age 32.62years).Their expression of iNOS-mRNA in the peripheral blood leukocyte was tested by in situ hybridization method and the NO level of the plasm tested by nitrate redutase. Expressions of iNOS-mRNA in the nasal mucosal were detected in 8 patients. All patients in this group have no history of parasitic disease, no medication in 24 hours and no corticosteroid administered at least one month before test.
