Pain is the most common complaint made in the clinic, involving almost every part of the body. Treatment of pain has been the concern and the headache of clinicians. Currently pain management and its specialty clinic have arisen as a new discipline which indicates its growing importance.Shang Han Za Bing Lun (Treatise on Cold-induced and Miscellaneous Diseases) written by Zhang Zhongjing is a classic of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) on pain management with a comprehensive system of theory, principle, formula and herbs for the first time. It is significant for theoretical development of pain management to study the book on its syndrome differentiation and treatment of pain. This thesis starts with the study of the account of pain, syndrome differentiation methods, theory for treatment and choice of herbs in this book. Systematic approach is used in the rearrangement, summary and inference of pain-related contents. Detailed analysis is made in terms of the nature, degree, scope, course and accompanying symptoms of pain mentioned in the book so that the characteristics and significance be analyzed too.The second part of the thesis does a further analysis of its characteristics in syndrome differentiation from the following aspects: cold/heat,deficiency/excess,exterior/interior,qi/blood,acute/chronic,n ew/old.Commonly-seen pulse manifestation of pain is also characterized to provide references for clinical diagnosis. In the part of treatment methods study, an explicit analysis is made by the following two categories: oral and external administration. The last part of this thesis is on formula and herbs for pain management. Overall review, calculation and summarization have been done. All the formula are rearranged and listed by indication of location or principal herb. A total formula is divided into 10 major categories. Each category is further analyzed and compared to show what's common or unique for each formula and how they should be indicated.Meanwhile, since Zhang Zhongjing based his pain management methods on previous literature, so tracing back to the source of his idea is crucial to deep understanding of his theory of syndrome differentiation. The fourth part of this thesis makes a literature review of Zhang Zhongjing's theory origin in classics like Huang Di Nei Jing (Huang Di's Internal Classics) and Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (Shen Nong's Herbal), commenting on and analyzing pain-related content.Based on above studies, the last part of the thesis attempted the pathogenesis of pain in modern medicine, significance of pain management methods on modern pain study, characteristics of pain evaluation system commonly in use, discussion on herbs preparation (dose, effective ingredients, processing) and suggestions on new analgetic drug development in the future.Zhang Zhongjing's principle of treating pain based on its cause and his effective formula are significant for modern pain management studies and worthy of further reflection and research.
