In the middle period of 1980s, the scholar of the Soviet Union, professor Buurman discovered that besides the health and disease conditions there was an edge condition between the health and disease that was sub-health condition.WHO has recently issued a predictive survey which proclaimed that 75% people of world population was under unhealthy state, with only 5 percent being healthy in a genuinely medical sense. And hence comes the importance of study on sub-health condition. In fact, from the late of 80's, medical experts from all over the world have carried out a quantity of researches in this field and put forward a series of protective measures.Hong Kong is one of the most prosperous cities, the residents of which are bearing great pressure that is rarely seen worldwide. Quite a lot of them must be suffering from the sub-healthy condition. The data on this subject, however, is not common and sufficient. As a matter of fact, because of the actual influence of different cultural and social backgrounds, the general public of Hong Kong has long attached great importance to a sub-health status and has had a inherent perception of the special fields of TCM, while, on the other hand, the mainstream medicine in Hong Kong - the western medicine, though with enough understanding of this field, lacks certain intervention measures. Thus it is the current situation peculiar to the Hong Kong community that the treatment of a sub-health condition is generally intervened by the local Chinese clinics.First thing in our research is to outline the present situation of studies on sub-health condition, including the origin of its definition, diagnostic criteria prescribed by scholars, regular causes, various intervention measures and the current studies in TCM. A set of standards is also made out, which enacts the symptom of a sub-health condition that there shall be discomfort in at least three successive months or notable decline of physical adaptability, and there shall be definite diagnostic or otherwise with no direction connection between the disease and the discomfort. And a health questionnaire is also formed.Since the subject of this project is the Hong Kong residents who consult TCM clinics, a brief on the particular relation between Traditional Chinese medicine and them is necessary, which has come into existence for historical, cultural, regional, and customary reasons. These reasons also covers the issues like the attitude of the then British colonial government toward TCM, the governmental and non-governmental strive in developing TCM, the perseverance of local TCM doctors, health condition of local people and their need for health, the role of TCM pharmacies and the managers, and the popularity of herbal tea. The manifestation of these relations differs greatly from those between doctors and patients in a western medicine hospital and this also involves the attitude of Hong Kong people towards the role of TCM as well as TCM doctors in Hong Kong.This project is significant because of the indispensible relation between the development of TCM in Hong Kong and the sub-health condition in terms of history, region. and customs. This project will survey patients in TCM clinics on the basis of health questionnaire, analyze residents" symptoms of sub-health condition and their characteristics in TCM. and collect the results of the effects of TCM intervention in sub-health condition.In a word, this project not only generalizes the health condition of Hong Kong patients in TCM hospitals, but also acquires information on the effects of TCM intervention in sub-condition treatment. It also explores the positive influences of the sub-health studies on TCM's development.
