Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a commonly seen disorder in both osteopathy and massage therapy. Approximately twenty percent of patients with lower back or leg pain have LDH. Due to the pain and restricted movement typical of this condition, LDH seriously affects both the professional and personal lives of patients. According to epidemiological research on spinal disease, the most common symptom of LDH is lower back pain. Fifty to seventy percent of patients will suffer from relapse after treatment; the annual rate of occurrence is five percent. This disorder has significant socioeconomic implications and is already considered an important public health issue. We have examined the latest research concerning LDH and associated lumbar pain, including epidemiology, high risk factors, pathology and diagnosis, as well as prevention and treatment for each stage of disease progression. We have also systematically researched and organized information relating to LDH found in traditional Chinese medical texts, including disease names, symptoms, pathogenesis, prevention and treatment. Finally, we have built upon the supervising professor's long-term research of therapeutic qigong, testing for the therapeutic effects of "Muscle Tendon Changing Classic" qigong when practiced by patients with LDH.Our study used radiography and a physical examination of subjects to assess initial lumbar disc herniation. Subjects were then randomly divided into two groups: the test group practiced "Muscle Tendon Changing Classic" qigong, while the control group received standard manipulation of the pelvis and lumbar regions. Study data was collected using the Modified Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (MRMQ) as well as frequency of pain, degree of pain, and aversion index, in order to measure subjects' ability to perform daily activities, pain levels, irritation and psychological condition. The study used the Chattanooga Group Inc. stable biofeedback system to measure muscle strength and endurance in the lumbar core muscle group (transverse abdominal muscles and multifidus muscle), thereby assessing the effects of "Muscle Tendon Changing Classic" qigong on the stability of the lumbar core muscle group. Both groups of patients reported positively on the reduction of pain. The "YiJinJing" training strengthened core muscle endurance more than that which could be recorded by the biofeedback unit. Both groups showed positive change in the Modified Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (MRMQ) assessment, especially the test group. Frequency of pain, degree of pain, and aversion index assessment also received positive feedback from both experimental groups, and no significant difference was found in results. Our study has thus demonstrated that the adoption of the "YiJinJing" training can be effective in improving lower back pain caused by lumbar disc herniation through the integration of analgesics and stability exercises, as well as improving health care efficiency and reducing medical costs. This will have a positive impact on the health care system today, as it is a low-cost, efficient and scientific solution to a commonly-seen disorder. The treatment is effective in harmonizing mental stability and easing psychological distress, in addition to improving patients' postural flaws. Hence, the treatment comprehensively demonstrates the unique characteristics of Traditional Chinese Medicine in its emphasis on prevention and treatment, conserving health care resources and reducing the financial burden on patients.
