Originated from India, Buddhism is one of the world three main religion factions. The spread of Buddhism across the Asian area has brought about great changes to countries such as China, Vietnam, Japan, and Korea. In the 2 BC, Buddhism found its way into Vietnam; hence a close correlation was built between the Buddhism tradition and the countries'growth. Thus the role of Buddhism in Vietnam is very important, especially in the religion belief, language, and culture aspect.The paper focuses on the study of Buddhism vocabulary in Vietnamese term. Bases on the Buddhism Dictionary edited by Chinese scholar Ding Fubao and the Vietnamese edition of Huiguang Buddhism Dictionary, a systematic study encompassing statistics, classification, analysis, and comparison will be conducted on monosyllables and disyllables. Buddhism vocabularies, phrases, and idioms in the Vietnamese Dictionary will also be referred to in the study. And the status and features of Vietnamese Buddhism vocabulary in the context of the Vietnamese vocabulary system will also be discussed thoroughly. Additionally, a comparison will be made among Sanskrit, modern mandarin Chinese, and modern Vietnamese with respect to Buddhism vocabulary. Proceeding from the study of comparison between Chinese and Vietnamese Buddhism vocabulary, loanword and its evolutionary path of Vietnamese Buddhism vocabulary will be discussed to strengthen the common laws of language evolution such as retaining and evolution of vocabulary meanings. Changes of vocabulary's fundamental meanings include changes of basic meanings, separation of meanings, scopes of meanings, and emotional overtones. The lingual and cultural features of Vietnamese Buddhism vocabulary, with Buddhism idioms in specific, will be discussed as a complement.The paper asserts the important role of Buddhism vocabulary in the system of borrowed Vietnamese vocabulary for its contact, acceptance, and mixture of Vietnamese to expand the Vietnamese vocabulary pool. This paper's study on Vietnamese Buddhism vocabulary is not only an integrated part of the grand study on linguistic research in terms of Vietnamese Buddhism classics, but also a pioneering and leading initiative promised with rare social scientific, practical, and referential value.
