Research On Undulating Scale Of Intonation Of Reading Speech In Standard Mongolian

Based on Intonation Pattern Theory and applying undulating scale algorithm proposed by professor Shi Feng, this research implements quantitative and qualitative analysis of declarative, imperative, interrogative, exclamatory sentences of four standard Mongolian speakers, demonstrates performances of sentence pitch range and tone group range of four kinds of sentences and explores intonation undulating scale features of four kinds of sentences and their relations.This paper consists of eight chapters (Preface, Formal Feature Of Four Basic Sentences In Standard Mongolian, Intonation Undulating Scale Of Declarative Sentences In Standard Mongolian, Intonation Undulating Scale Of Imperative Sentences In Standard Mongolian, Intonation Undulating Scale Of Interrogative Sentences In Standard Mongolian, Intonation Undulating Scale Of Exclamatory Sentences In Standard Mongolian, Intonation Comparison Of Four Kinds Of Sentences In Standard Mongolian, Results And Discussion), references and appendix. Research process can be divided into two steps. Firstly, quantitative analysis of sentence pitch of declarative sentence, three kind of interrogative sentences (yes-no question, content question, intonation questions), three kinds of imperative sentences (command, suggestion, petitionary sentence), two kinds of exclamatory sentences (positive, negative) as well as sentence pitch range, width variance, undulating scale characteristics and relation of tone group pitch range were conducted. Secondly, through intonation comparison between declarative and interrogative sentences, declarative and imperative sentences, declarative and exclamatory sentences, the paper presents pitch contour variance of four kinds of sentences and undulating scale characteristics of tone group pitch range and explores basic intonation patterns of four basic sentences in standard Mongolian.Research results indicate distinctive feature of different sentence intonation and speakers through observing variance of pitch contour, undulating scale of intonation contour (Q value) and width variance of pitch range of sentence and pitch range of tone group. In the meantime, minor differences of sentences with same kind and different tone can be observed. It is evident that intonation is related with intonation undulating mode, sentence pitch range, tone group pitch range, maximum pitch, minimum pitch etc. The width range of tone group pitch range and relative position in sentence pitch range play an important categorizing role. The experiment results imply that although pitch is very important in studying sentence intonation, stress, prosody and syntactic structure etc. also must be taken into consideration.
