Master Zhiyi, founder of the eclectic Tiantai Buddhist sect, was the first person to develop an ideology ofBuddhism in an indigenous Chinese system, which exhibited the Buddhist cultural essence of Southern andNorthern dynasties. Before Master Zhiyi entered into nirvana, he dictated to his disciples in verses theprinciples of his lifetime practice of Buddhism. It was named The Treatise of Contemplating the Mindwhich was handed down to his disciples and following generations of Buddhist practitioners for reference. However, this invaluable research theory has not attracted appropriate attention from the academia. At present, there is minimal special study though this subject warrants much deeper exploration. This text hopes to initiatediscussionandattractsfarmoreseriousstudyregardingTiantai'sapproachincontemplatingthemind. The study of this treatise is divided into six chapters:-Chapter one is an introduction of its motives and aims, result of academic research and thestudy method, and discusses formality of this text etc.-Chapter two looks at the peripheral problems of The Treatise of Contemplating The Mind, discusses the lifetime contributions made by Master Zhiyi and the cause of his death, and also collatethe versions of TCM.-Chapters three to five are the core discussions of thisthesis, mainlyaimed at the36questions,analyze the meaning of its profoundness by filtering through the framework and comparison madewith the four books of Tiantai on concentration and contemplation (Zhiguan): Mohe Zhiguan,Jianci Zhiguan, Buding Zhiguan and Xiao Zhiguan. Before the study of these36questions,will look at Zhiyi's definition of contemplating the mind and the particularities of Tiantaicontemplation methods first.-Chapters four and five expand the analysis of TCM contents by dividing into5parts i.e.contemplating this self-arising of mind thus;1.be aware of the deviance of non orthodox teaching,2.understand the differences of each teaching in four doctrines,3.cultivate the practice ofconcentration and contemplating the mind,4.achieve attainment of enlightenment,5.liberate sentientbeings with expedient means.-Chapter sixdiscussesthe value of Zhiyi's thought of contemplatingthe mindand its specialfeatures and review this thesis.During the study, discovered that the last sermon of Master Zhiyi which is less than three thousand words, not only extracted the essential parts from his four books of concentration and contemplation (Zhiguan), but alsoaddedsupplementarytotheuntaughtandcirculatedpartsof ShichanBoluomiCidiFamen, LiumiaoFamen,KeyWaysofMindfulnessPracticeofConcentration,ContemplationandMeditation and MoheZhiguan etc.,which filled up the inadequate gaps of these4books. Although, these verses are just a few short lines, for Tiantaipractitioners, these are very important instructions and milestones.
